What Makes Curly & Wavy Coats Different?
Curly and wavy coats tend to be naturally drier than straight coats. This is because the natural oils produced by the skin don’t travel as easily down the hair shaft.
That’s why these coat types are more prone to:
- Tangling and matting
- Frizz and flyaways
- Dryness and lack of shine
Without the right care, knots can quickly form - especially in high friction areas like behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar.
The Essentials of Curly Coat Care
Keeping a curly coat healthy doesn’t have to be complicated - it just needs the right approach.
1. Brush Before Bathing
Always brush your dog’s coat using detangling spray before bathing. Water tightens knots, making them harder (and more uncomfortable) to remove. A detangling spray is antistatic to reduce friction and pulling when brushing.
2. Focus on Hydration
Moisture is everything for curly coats. Using a hydrating shampoo helps replenish lost oils and keep curls soft and manageable.
3. Always Condition
Conditioner isn’t optional for curly coats - it’s essential. It helps detangle, smooth the coat, and prevent breakage.
4. Be Gentle When Drying
Rough towel drying can create frizz and tangles. Instead, gently pat dry and allow the coat to air dry or use a low heat setting.
