Soothing dogs sensitive skin shampoo

Helping Dogs with Sensitive Skin: A Gentle Approach to Bath Time

If your dog has sensitive skin, bath time can sometimes feel like a guessing game. One shampoo works for a while… then suddenly the scratching returns.

Sensitive skin in dogs is actually very common. It can show up as dryness, flaking, redness, itchiness or a dull coat. The good news is that the right grooming routine - especially the right shampoo - can make a big difference to your dog’s comfort.

It’s worth noting at this point, that nothing compares to a vets consultation.

Whilst we can help soothe your dogs itchy skin, that will not address the underlying cause for irritation. Our products work very well for hydrating and soothing dry irritated skin; and for relief from grass allergies for example. Medicated shampoos may be required in some instances, such as for a bacterial infection.

Please consult your vet if you are unsure on the actual cause of your dogs irritation.

What causes sensitive skin in dogs?

Dogs can develop sensitive skin for many reasons, including:

  • Seasonal allergies
  • Environmental irritants such as grass or pollen
  • Frequent bathing with harsh shampoos
  • Diet or stress
  • Genetics (some breeds are naturally more sensitive)

When skin becomes irritated, the natural skin barrier can struggle to retain moisture, leaving the skin dry and itchy.

Why gentle ingredients matter

Dogs with sensitive skin benefit most from very gentle, nourishing shampoos that support the skin rather than stripping it.

All of our shampoos are based on organic aloe vera, which is known for its soothing and hydrating properties. Aloe helps calm irritated skin while supporting the coat with natural vitamins and minerals.

Our formulas are also:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Focused on supporting healthy skin and coat
  • Enriched with natural vitamins and minerals
  • Developed to work best for your dogs coat

This means they clean effectively while remaining gentle enough for regular grooming.

When dogs need an extra gentle option

For dogs with very reactive or allergy-prone skin, even natural essential oils can sometimes be too much.

That’s why we created our Ultra Sensitive range, which is completely free from added organic oils with a fragrance component. This makes it a clean, minimal formula designed specifically for dogs who react easily to other products.

Many owners find this helpful for dogs that experience:

  • frequent itching
  • skin flare-ups
  • allergies
  • very delicate or reactive skin

A note on other sensitive skin shampoos

You may have seen products such as oatmeal shampoos or medicated formulas recommended for sensitive skin.

These can be helpful in certain situations, particularly when recommended by a veterinarian. However, some dogs may find that certain formulations - especially stronger medicated washes - can be a little drying if used frequently.

For ongoing grooming, many owners prefer a hydrating, skin-supportive shampoo that maintains the coat and skin barrier between treatments.

Simple grooming tips for sensitive skin

A few small grooming habits can also help support your dog’s skin:

Brush before bathing

This removes loose fur and debris so the shampoo can reach the skin more effectively.

Use lukewarm water

Hot water can dry the skin further.

Rinse very thoroughly

Leftover shampoo residue can sometimes cause irritation.

Avoid over-bathing

Most dogs with sensitive skin do well with bathing every 3-4 weeks unless otherwise advised.

Healthy skin starts with gentle care

Dogs with sensitive skin don’t need complicated routines - they simply need consistent, gentle care that supports their skin barrier.

Using a mild shampoo, keeping the coat clean, and choosing formulas designed with skin health in mind can help your dog stay comfortable, shiny and itch-free.
